The overall objective of the project was to contribute to food security through scaling up utilization of Minjingu phosphate fertilizers and appropriate use of other fertilizers in food crop production in Northern and Eastern Zone of Tanzania. Specifically, the project aimed to:
1. To demonstrate the benefit of balanced fertilizer technologies, incorporating Minjingu phosphate rock on yields of major cereal and legume food crops in 10 districts in Tanzania
2. To improve targeting of areas for MPR application
3. To build capacity of stakeholders (farmers, extension staff, agro-dealers, NGO staff, etc) in appropriate fertilizer technologies and their correct use for improved agricultural productivity and conservation of natural fertility and environment.
The project used participatory approach involving small scale rice and maize farmers, Local Government extension service and local government leaders. On farm farmers managed demonstration plots were used to evaluate performance of Minjingu fertilizer and demonstrate appropriate use of fertilizers in food crop production
