Introduction
The Soil-Water Management Research Programme (SWMRP) is based at the Sokoine University of Agriculture in the College of Agriculture. The SWMRP which was initiated in 1991 has a long-term research programme.
Vision and Mission
The vision and mission statement of the SWMRP are stated as follows:
Vision: To became a centre of excellence in Agriculture.
Mission: To promote Agricultural development through training, research and delivery of services
Objectives
The objectives includes among others the following:
(i) Conduct research and consultancy
(ii) Conduct training and outreach services
(iii) Influence policy, strategies and programmes of relevant stakeholders.
What we do
To achieve its mission, SWMRG with support from partner institutions and various donors, committed itself to develop human resource in various fields of agriculture. This would ensure availability of human capacity to conduct quality research in biophysical, socio-economics, socio-cultural, policy and institutional arrangements in agriculture. With this focus, SWMRP has successfully continued to support students from various national and international institutions to pursue Doctorate (PhD) and Masters Degrees in various aspects related to the fields of agriculture.
To-date, 15 PhD candidates have graduated from SUA and other universities under the direct sponsorship of SWMRP. Five (5) more candidates are at various stages of completing their PhDs. In addition, SWMRP host students from international institutions who are pursuing PhDs and MSc. The support is in-terms of mentoring and guidance during field work. Furthermore, more than 29 MSc students have graduated either under the direct sponsorship or hosted by SWMRG. Most of the graduates are serving in various capacities in national and international organisations. This website also shows a short summary of the students supported or hosted by SWMRP to-date.
Achievements
SWMRP has produced over 20 PhD theses and 50 MSc theses in the past 10 years. Researchers have published e.g. over 200 scientific papers in peer reviewed journals, articles, papers, policy briefs and extension materials.
